The story is set in Paris during World War II, at a time when Paris has been occupied by Nazi Germany. Mr. Hoffman, due to his Jewish identity, has to let his family leave first and entrust his jewelry store to his subordinate, Messier. However, things don't go as planned; shortly after Messier and his wife Blanch take over the jewelry store, Mr. Hoffman reappears in the store. Thus, the fates of the three characters become intertwined.
