Some officials abandoned the city and fled, but many soldiers remained, vowing to defend this crumbling city to the death. Officer Lu Jianxiong (played by Liu Ye) from Song Xilian's unit engaged in intense urban warfare with Japanese troops alongside his comrades. Their weak yet tenacious resistance was eventually suppressed, and tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers and civilians became prisoners, their blood staining the Yangtze River amid the gunfire; in the safety zone of Jinling Women's College, female teacher Jiang Shuyun (played by Gao Yuanyuan) worked tirelessly to help and rescue all the compatriots seeking refuge there, but the savage Japanese army had already set their sights on the women hiding there; Mr. Tang (played by Fan Wei), John Rabe's secretary, handled things cautiously, making compromises to protect his family, but he paid a price for his wrong choices; dancer Xiao Jiang (played by Jiang Yiyan), even as she fled and sought refuge, refused to abandon her femininity, infusing a strength beneath her woman's exterior at critical moments; Japanese officer Kadokawa (played by Nakauzu Hiroshi) moved into this city, riddled with wounds and utterly devastated, and in this hell on earth, he felt an unprecedented shock to his soul. Amidst the raging smoke of war and rivers of blood, in the context of a great era, people must endure the cruel gifts of the times while making painful choices that will determine their fates…
