Steve (played by Bill Murray) is a marine documentary director whose works have added a dreamy color to the childhoods of many children. During a shoot, Steve's old friend is killed by a tiger shark, which deeply traumatizes him, and he vows to find the shark to avenge his friend, turning this into the theme of his new film. At a press event, Steve meets a young man named Ned (played by Owen Wilson), who claims to be his son, and he invites Ned to join his creative team. Steve faces many challenges including a lack of funds, a troubled relationship with his wife, and his documentary losing its appeal.
