In 1929 England, Mrs. Whittaker (played by Kristin Scott Thomas) is the head of an aristocratic family, carefully managing household affairs and balancing the relationships between her husband (Colin Firth) and their two daughters. However, everything is disrupted with the return of her eldest son, John Whittaker (played by Ben Barnes). John's wife is the striking American racer, Larita (played by Jessica Biel), whose many behaviors are viewed as extravagant by her traditional mother-in-law.
