In the British suburbs, a family moves into a black apartment. The father (played by Hanns Zischler) dies suddenly while tending to the yard, and the mother (played by Sinéad Cusack) falls ill, worsening over time. To prevent their four children from being taken by social services, the mother insists on not going to the hospital, ultimately passing away in despair. The eldest son Jack (played by Andrew Robertson) and eldest daughter Julie (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg) secretly bury their mother's body in the cement, living alone with their siblings Tom (played by Ned Birkin) and Su (played by Alice Coulthard).
