This film tells the spiritual journey of two rural boys experiencing the weaning of their innocence. Liangzi (played by Li Ming) accidentally injures a hen that is laying eggs with a slingshot. From then on, the injured hen only eats but doesn't lay eggs. His mother, unwilling to waste food, plans to sell it at the market. Accompanying her is Liangzi, who sees a chicken dealer preparing to kill the hen in front of him; he is overwhelmed with unspoken emotions. He takes the hen back home, treats its wounds, and soon the hen recovers but still does not lay eggs. Ultimately, they kill it to serve to his visiting uncle during the New Year. Er Bao (played by Ma Zhancheng) sources his school fees from the family's breeding pig and its piglets. Rural children have few toys, and sometimes Er Bao pretends to ride the sow, finding joy in his childhood.
