Sister Helen (Susan Sarandon) is entrusted by death row inmate Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn) to visit him in prison. Matthew denies murdering a young couple, for which he has been sentenced to death, and files an appeal. Helen travels extensively, probing deep into the village to uncover the truth. On one side are the innocent couple who were brutally killed, and on the other is the mentally reliant criminal facing execution. Helen tries various ways to help Matthew, but when she confronts the heartbreaking pleas of the victims' parents and the public's outrage, she finds herself entangled in a moral dilemma. Ultimately, Helen reaches Matthew’s heart. Before his execution, Matthew confesses to his crimes and seeks forgiveness from the victims' families, spending his final 168 hours of life in peace and dignity. This film is based on the true story of Sister Helen Prejean, and Susan Sarandon won the Best Actress award at the 68th Academy Awards for this film.
