Isak (played by Victor Sjöström) has been practicing medicine for 50 years and is nearly eighty years old. He is preparing to return to his alma mater to receive an honorary degree accompanied by his daughter-in-law. On the way, Isak takes the opportunity to revisit old places and reminisce about the past. Isak once had a beautiful first love with his cousin Sara (played by Bibi Andersson), but due to his cold and reclusive nature, his brother took advantage of the situation. Now, sitting on the lawn, Isak recalls the past, envisioning Sara's beautiful figure in a white dress. His inherently cold and rational personality doomed his marriage to fail. Isak's wife could not endure the icy relationship and sought an affair. This family atmosphere, combined with the inherited cold disposition, led Isak's son to be unwilling to have children and to become estranged from his daughter-in-law. Isak received the honorary degree, yet he remains immersed in heavy self-reflection about the past. For this elderly man nearing the end of life, it seems like a journey of spiritual redemption.
