In the 1920s, during an afternoon recording session in Chicago, the band members are waiting for the groundbreaking performer, the legendary "Mother of the Blues," Ma Rainey (played by Oscar winner Viola Davis), as the atmosphere becomes increasingly tense. As the recording progresses, the fearless and hot-tempered Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music. Ambitious trumpeter Levee (played by Chadwick Boseman) is very taken with Ma's girlfriend and is determined to make a name for himself in the music industry. While the band waits in the cramped rehearsal room of the studio, he urges the musicians to share stories that will forever change their lives. This film, adapted from the play by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson, celebrates the transformative power of the blues and the artists who refuse to let social prejudice determine their worth. Directed by George C. Wolfe, with a screenplay adaptation by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, the film is produced by Denzel Washington and Todd Black, who received an Oscar nomination for Fences. The ensemble cast includes Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts, Taylour Paige, Dusan Brown, with music by Emmy winner Branford Marsalis.
