Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) is left destitute after her husband Hal is arrested for business fraud and ends his life in prison. She leaves New York to seek refuge with her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins) in San Francisco. Suddenly thrust from a life of luxury into the world of ordinary people, Jasmine suffers a breakdown. She often talks to herself and is consumed by memories of her past, feeling out of place among those around her. She dislikes Ginger's ex-husband Augie, and even more so Ginger's current boyfriend Chill. Jasmine finds a job at a dental office and returns to school, yet her life remains a mess. Until, at a party, she meets a charming, handsome, and wealthy civil servant who quickly wins her heart. Jasmine's life seems to be back on track, but just as they are about to buy wedding rings, the appearance of Ginger's ex-husband Augie turns her world upside down...
