The story recounts a true event from the American civil rights movement. In 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Louis Till was kidnapped and brutally murdered after being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a white woman. Two white suspects were acquitted by an all-white jury. Emmett's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley (played by Danielle), decided to hold an open-casket funeral for her son in order to seek justice, allowing Jet magazine to publish photos from the funeral. She wanted people around the world to know about her son's fate. As a result, thousands saw Emmett's photo, making his case a symbol of the injustice faced by Black people in the South. Whoopi plays Emmett's grandmother, Alma Calhoun.
