The story takes place during World War II, where Simon (played by Bill Skarsgård) grows up in an ordinary working-class family. Although his father and mother care for and love him deeply, Simon always feels a sense of alienation and strangeness within the family, and he doesn't even know why. Simon loves reading, but there's a lack of such an atmosphere at home. Despite his father's opposition, Simon decides to go to school. At school, he meets a Jewish boy named Isaac (played by Karl Linnertorp), whose father is a writer. Sharing similar interests, the two quickly become close friends. By chance, Simon is shocked to discover that he is not his parents' biological child, and he decides to embark on a journey to find his true family.
