The story takes place in Taiwan in the 1990s, where television host Ding Yumei (played by Yang Lin) faces the threat of being fired due to the low ratings of her show "Prodigy World." She enlists the help of her friend Cheng Ling (played by Cen Jianxun) from Hong Kong to produce an episode featuring a chess prodigy to boost ratings. During this time, they encounter a child named Wang Shengfang, who has the extraordinary ability to predict the future, inspiring hope in everyone... In their search for the young chess king, Cheng Ling is often interrupted by his memories—during the Cultural Revolution, he participated in the fervent sent-down youth movement with his cousin Ni Bin (played by Jin Shijie). On the train, they meet Wang Yisheng (played by Liang Jiahui), who is obsessed with chess, and A Cheng (played by Yan Hao), who comes from an art background. Subsequently, they encounter a series of troubles on the farm. Later, due to an oversight, Wang Yisheng ends up in prison, but thanks to Ni Bin using a "family heirloom"—a set of Yuan dynasty chess pieces to facilitate his release, he manages to get through the crisis. Eventually, with the help of everyone, Wang Yisheng participates in a special chess king competition, with surprising results... The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by renowned writer A Cheng.
