The story takes place in the picturesque Buenos Aires, Argentina. Carlos (played by Antonio Banderas) is a playwright who has gained a fair bit of fame for writing several successful plays. Carlos and his wife Cecilia (played by Emma Thompson) have been married for many years, and their relationship has always been very loving. Cecilia is a journalist who is relatively well-known in her field, and she and Carlos are considered by their friends to be a perfect couple, a golden pair. One day, however, Cecilia is secretly detained in a concentration camp after her news article touches the sensitive political nerves of those in power. With his wife's life uncertain, Carlos falls into despair and pain, willing to pay any price to have her by his side again. Strangely, since Cecilia's disappearance, Carlos discovers he has acquired a special ability—to find out the whereabouts of those who have been secretly arrested, similar to Cecilia, by looking at their photographs.
