After graduating from university, Mali (played by Gong Li) arrives alone in the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong, hoping to carve out a new life for herself. Without a Hong Kong ID, Mali frequently faces setbacks in her career. One day, she meets Peter (played by Lin Junxian), the young owner of a jewelry store, and they fall in love. Peter has always promised to give Mali a rightful place in his life, but he has not taken any action and even refuses to introduce her to his family. In a chance encounter, Mali meets Wang Guowei (played by Chung Chen-Tao), a businessman who has lived in the UK since childhood. As they get to know each other, they become old friends, and Mali often confides in Wang Guowei about her troubles, while he patiently offers support. Over time, a genuine affection develops between Mali and Wang Guowei. Wang Guowei invites Mali to work as his assistant, but Peter strongly opposes it.
