Retired teacher Grant (Gordon Pinsent) has spent 44 years living with his wife Fiona (Julie Christie) in a quiet and comfortable life. However, the elegant and noble Fiona develops dementia, and her memory begins to decline, becoming increasingly severe. Fiona decides to enter a nursing home, and her loving husband Grant reluctantly agrees. The couple, who has never been apart, must not see each other for a month after Fiona's hospitalization. When Grant reappears before Fiona, he finds that she seems to have forgotten him and has fallen in love with another patient at the nursing home, Aubrey. Faced with this sudden change, Grant is at a loss. Just then, Aubrey leaves the nursing home, leaving Fiona very unsettled. Grant tracks down Aubrey's wife and persuades her to send her husband back to the nursing home, but Aubrey's wife Marianne is unwilling to give up their current home due to the high cost of hospitalization; it is everything to her. In the end, however, Marianne is moved by Grant's sincerity. Reluctant to see his wife in pain, Grant brings Aubrey back to the nursing home, but Fiona's reaction surprises Grant deeply...
