The story takes place during the Qing Dynasty, where the emperor is gravely ill and requires the relics inside the little living Buddha to heal. The Fifth Prince, upon learning of this, goes to the abbot of Shaolin Temple and demands the little living Buddha, but the abbot refuses. The Fifth Prince then sends troops to massacre the Shaolin Temple. At the abbot's request, Xinyi (played by Li Ruotong) embarks on a journey to escape with 18 young monks, including Fuzai (played by Hu Bin), Shentong (played by Zhou Tianlong), and Chunzi (played by Chen Zhuo), with the little living Buddha among them. Only the former monk Master San De (played by Liu Ximing) knows the little living Buddha's true identity, and Xinyi and her group head to the ancient town of Gulong where he resides. Meanwhile, the Fifth Prince sends assassins in pursuit. In a moment of peril, Xinyi and her companions are saved by a man named Derong (played by Ji Tiansheng), who teaches the young monks a set of drunken fist techniques, helping the children open the door to a new world.
