Jack (Cole Hauser) and Molly (Kate Levering) are an ordinary couple living a peaceful and secure life with their adopted son Joey (Maxwell Perry Cotton). Although Joey is not their biological child, Molly and Jack have long regarded him as their own. One day, a sudden phone call shatters their blissful life. It turns out that Joey's biological father, Rip (Barry Pepper), who has just been released from prison, and his wife Wendy (Mira Sorvino) have made a reckless decision to take Joey away from Molly and Jack to create their own family.
