In 1865, the four-year American Civil War was coming to an end, and President Abraham Lincoln (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) was beginning his second term. In the last four months of his life and term, Lincoln was engaged in a struggle more arduous than the Civil War: pushing for the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in Congress. This amendment would legally and permanently abolish the existence of slavery in the United States. However, the timing of the proposed amendment was terrible: abolitionist sentiments lacked public support; Congress was dominated by conservative forces; and the radical supporters of abolition were dissatisfied with Lincoln’s style. When the seceded Southern states expressed a willingness to return to the negotiation table and end the Civil War, Lincoln found himself facing a painful dilemma: to seek a compromised peace or to uphold his moral convictions? To end slavery or to end the war? "If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong." Based on the historical work "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln," written by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner and directed by Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg, the biopic "Lincoln," starring two-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis, brings the audience close to Lincoln’s greatest achievement: the abolition of slavery. The Lincoln in the film is a shrewd and flexible politician, as well as a strategic military commander; a grieving father who lost a son, and a guilt-ridden husband. At a moment when his country was in despair, Lincoln showed extraordinary foresight by looking beyond the war and dedicating his efforts to the grand game of altering the country's direction. He sought to persuade the American people that when people of different colors looked up, they would see the same starry sky.
