Miles (Paul Giamatti) and Jack (Thomas Haden Church) are longtime friends. As Jack is about to enter the institution of marriage, Miles reflects more on his own failed life: a failed marriage, unreachable writer dreams, a dull and monotonous job, and his advancing age. With a deep knowledge of wine, the two decide to head to California’s wine country for a wild time, hoping for a one-night stand if possible. Indeed, the two meet a waitress and her Asian friend in the fragrant wine region of California, and their romantic escapades thrill both of them. However, things quickly take a disappointing turn. Their wild plans are filled with obstacles.
