The story takes place during the Ming dynasty, where Li Shizhen (played by Zhao Dan) gains the affection and recognition of the common people due to his superb medical skills and noble character. The King of Chu invites Li Shizhen to the palace to treat the prince, and the strange ailments that perplex the court physicians are resolved by Li Shizhen. He is given the opportunity to further his studies at the Imperial Medical Institute, but his only request is for the King of Chu to recompile the Materia Medica. Li Shizhen cannot tolerate the outdated methods of his colleagues at the Imperial Medical Institute, knowing that if he stays there, he will never realize his ambitions. Thus, he resigns and returns to his hometown, deciding to revise the Materia Medica with his own hands. When the villagers learn of Li Shizhen's aspirations, they extend their helping hands. Li Shizhen personally verifies the efficacy of hundreds of medicinal herbs, gradually perfecting the "Materia Medica."
