James (Ed Helms) is a police officer who one day encounters a woman named Vanessa (Taraji P. Henson), a charming single mother. Before long, the two, who are quite taken with each other, start a relationship. Vanessa has a 12-year-old son, Kareem (Terrence Little Gardenhigh), who unfortunately is going through a rebellious phase and is very resistant to James's presence. In an attempt to scare James away from his mother, Kareem even considers hiring a fugitive, but this plan ends up bringing dangerous consequences for both him and his mother. Left with no choice, Kareem has to team up with James as they face a heartless killer.
