This musical DVD is based on the life of Jesus, with Andrew Lloyd Webber innovatively connecting the serious religious story with avant-garde rock music. It is a work of bold artistic expression and profound philosophical thought. If "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" is an illustration of a biblical story, then "Superstar" seems to be a complete subversion and reaction against tradition: the Son of God, Jesus, is no longer perpetually imbued with the halo of a saintly figure; he has weaknesses and doubts, with more humanity replacing divinity; Judas's betrayal is not driven by greed but by a fate orchestrated by God. After his suicide, Judas appears in a white robe, leading a choir of angels to pose several philosophical questions to Jesus, who astonishingly does not know the answers. Observant readers can easily notice the similarities in the plot arrangement to the movie "The Last Temptation of Christ." Like the latter, the play faced strong protests from orthodox religious figures upon its release, which ironically increased its notoriety, with its songs "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar" lingering on music charts for a long time.
The author feels that the essence of this play, like "The Last Temptation of Christ," does not lie in its deviation from orthodoxy, but rather in its portrayal of the martyr's obedience to God through a convoluted form. In the end, Jesus sacrifices himself for humanity's sins according to God's plan, resurrects, and ascends after forgiving his enemies. If you have a deeper understanding of Christianity, this play can certainly provide you with some different perspectives. Of course, aside from its background, even when appreciated purely as a rock musical, this DVD is a must-see. Another version of the play is the film of the same name produced by Universal Pictures in 1973.
The biblical film offers a more intimate feel. The songs composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber are melodious and captivating, and the cinematography and editing of the entire film are of top-notch quality.
