Tom Cruise won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for this film. Jimmy (played by Philip Baker Hall) is terminally ill with cancer and struggles to tell his daughter about his condition as she becomes infatuated with a neighbor, while his wife is unable to help. Guest Stanley (played by Jeremy Blackman) is on the verge of breaking a record set by Donnie (played by William H. Macy) 30 years ago, unaware that Donnie can only find work at an appliance store.
