The film is directed by Emilio Estevez, who is the eldest son of the film's star, Martin Sheen. This is the seventh collaboration between this father-son duo in film and television. Tom (Martin Sheen), an American doctor, travels to France to retrieve his son Daniel's (Emilio Estevez) body and belongings after his son tragically dies in France. Daniel died in the Pyrenees while on the Way of St. James to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela; he encountered a storm and quietly left the world. This path to the cathedral is also known as the "Way of St. James." Initially, Tom's goal was simply to retrieve Daniel's body, but after arriving in France, he decides to walk the path Daniel had traveled and not completed, to better understand his son's life and to gain insight into his child. During his journey along the Way of St. James, Tom meets three "pilgrims" from different countries, all seeking greater meaning in life and hoping to find spiritual solace through their walking in the secular world.
