The director of the Astronomy Academy (played by Georges Méliès) proposes a fantastic plan for a trip to the moon during a meeting. Together with five bold astronomers, he creates a projectile capsule and cannon, and with the help of the military, they successfully reach the moon in the capsule. After their excitement, the six astronomers fall into a deep sleep on the lunar surface, unaware that many stars are quietly observing their slumbering faces. A final cold snowfall awakens them. The group hides in a cave but inadvertently disturbs the moon people with an umbrella, leading to a frantic adventure... This film is a groundbreaking work of science fiction, inspired by Jules Verne's novel "From the Earth to the Moon" and H.G. Wells' novel "The First Men in the Moon." It was released in 1902 in both black-and-white and hand-painted color versions, with a runtime of about 14 minutes. The ending of the color version was once lost. In 1993, a severely damaged copy of the color version was donated by a private collector to the Film Archive in Barcelona, Spain; in 2002, the ending "Return Triumphantly" was rediscovered in France. The film restoration project lasted over ten years. In 2011, a complete color restored version of the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Méliès' birth, marking 109 years since the film's release.
