The story takes place in early Republican China in Beijing. Han Yueren (played by Song Dandan) lost her father at a young age, and her mother (played by Siqin Gaowa) remarried Cui Wu (played by Sun Benhou). Cui provided for Yueren's education, but unexpectedly passed away, leaving the mother and daughter in distress once again. Driven by the need to survive, the mother becomes a shameful prostitute, and Yueren feels she cannot hold her head high, moving into the school. Soon after graduating from high school, she struggles to find a job. Gao Junsheng (played by Liao Jingsheng), who is already married, is infatuated with Yueren's youth and beauty and offers her food and lodging. Yueren, feeling grateful, ends up giving herself to him. Gao's wife, Meng Shuxian (played by Yuan Li), discovers her husband's affair and, after several inquiries, finds Yueren. This brings Yueren to her senses, realizing she is nothing more than Gao Junsheng's plaything. After losing her source of income, Yueren becomes a waitress at a restaurant, but is fired for rejecting customers' harassment. Ultimately, she turns to prostitution and uses the money from selling herself to support her mother, who has become a beggar after aging and losing her looks...
