This film is adapted from the autobiography of former South African President Mandela, published in 1994. He was a barefoot village boy who walked through the mountains; he was a passionate young lawyer shouting "Long live freedom!"; he was an armed revolutionary leader opposing the government; he was a political prisoner who endured 27 years of imprisonment, exile, and forced labor; he was the first black president elected in South Africa's democratic elections. His name is Mandela. Mandela (played by Idris Elba) dedicated his life to resisting apartheid policies, transforming from a revolutionary fighter into a peace advocate, turning a deeply divided country into an equal and harmonious nation, setting an example for the world, but at a heavy cost. At the age of 43, Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment for attempting to overthrow the government, separated from his wife Winnie (played by Naomie Harris), never having the chance to be with his descendants. Even after regaining his freedom 27 years later and becoming a revered president and hero, he lost the love of his life—a long separation and political persecution drove the couple further apart. While Mandela promoted ideas of peace and tolerance, Winnie carried the burden of hatred and declared war. Between the people's freedom and the woman he loved, Mandela made a painful choice.
