Veteran agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) experiences a rare lapse in judgment when he is ambushed by the mysterious organization known as "The Syndicate" while receiving a new mission. The Syndicate is a secret group made up of former agents from around the world that has been dismissed as a hoax by the CIA. With the help of Syndicate member Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), Ethan manages to escape and promptly informs William Brandt (Jeremy Renner) of the Syndicate's actual existence. However, Brandt is facing difficulties as the IMF has been accused of various incidents involving Russian nuclear warheads and has been ordered to disband by the CIA. When Ethan learns of a plot to assassinate the President of Austria, he contacts his old partner Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) to take action, reuniting with the mysterious woman Ilsa.
