Swedish doctor Anton (Mikael Persbrandt) works for years in a refugee camp in Sudan, facing daily the pain and death caused by armed violence; during his vacations, he flies back to Denmark to alternately care for his two sons with his estranged wife Marianne (Trine Dyrholm). The boy Christian (William Jøhnk Nielsen), who moved from London to Denmark, feels a rift with his father after his mother's death. At his new school, he befriends Anton's eldest son Elias (Markus Rygaard), who suffers from discrimination and bullying due to being Swedish. Christian teaches Elias to retaliate, and the two boys from broken families become friends. Anton takes his two sons and Christian out for a trip, but they are humiliated and slapped multiple times due to a misunderstanding. Anton insists on resolving the situation with tolerance and forgiveness, which the children fail to understand. After discovering explosives in the storage room, Christian begins to encourage Elias to join his dangerous revenge plan. Meanwhile, Anton, who has returned to Sudan, is undergoing a moral dilemma after treating a notorious local boss... The film, originally titled "The Revenge," was later renamed "In a Better World" and won both the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 68th Golden Globes and the 83rd Academy Awards in 2011.
