The film tells the legendary story of the renowned general Qi Jiguang's campaign against the Japanese pirates to restore peace along the coast. During the mid-Ming Dynasty, in the Jiajing period, local officials were corrupt and the morale of the Ming soldiers was low, allowing pirates to take advantage of the situation and repeatedly invade the southeast coast. At this time of internal and external troubles, Qi Jiguang (played by Zhao Wenzhuo) was appointed and, along with Yu Dayou (played by Hong Jinbao), independently recruited 3,000 villagers from Yiwu. In just a few days, they trained new soldiers with strict military discipline and unorthodox methods, armed the troops with advanced weapons and exceptional formations, becoming the first “special forces” in history, known worldwide as the "Qi Family Army."
