The story takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2016. In response to the rising crime rate, a large weapons company developed a fully mechanical police force. They mass-produced mechanical police officers and deployed them, achieving remarkable results in combating crime. As one of the developers, programmer Deon (played by Dev Patel) has been dedicated to creating a fully artificial intelligent robot. One day, he made a breakthrough in his research, but did not receive support from his boss, Michelle Bradley (played by Sigourney Weaver). Unwilling to accept failure, Deon secretly took a recently damaged mechanical police officer out of the company to enhance his research, only to be hijacked by three criminals along the way. Under the threat from the criminals, Deon programmed the robot with the number 22. 22 was reborn as "Chappie," and its birth was about to change the fates of many people...
