Leda (played by Olivia Colman) goes on a solo vacation to the beach, where she becomes fixated on a young mother and daughter. Their striking relationship, along with their noisy and troublesome family members, unsettles Leda, reminding her of the fears, confusion, and struggles she faced when she became a mother herself. An unintentional act plunges Leda into a psychological world that feels both alien and ominous, leading her to confront her past: when she was a young mother, she made extraordinary choices that resulted in a series of consequences. This film is the directorial debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal, who adapted the screenplay from Elena Ferrante's novel.
