The story takes place in Australia in 1980, where Michael (Sam Neill) and his wife Lindy (Meryl Streep) are on a family trip with their three children. One night, the couple leaves their youngest child Azaria in her crib to visit friends, only to have an unexpected tragedy claim Azaria's young life. What Michael and Lindy did not anticipate was that, in addition to enduring the immense grief of losing their child, they would be accused of being the masterminds behind the tragedy. A lengthy trial followed, and despite a lack of critical evidence, Lindy was sentenced to life in prison. While in jail, Lindy gave birth to a fourth child, who was then entrusted to Michael's care. Throughout her long years in prison, Lindy continuously appealed her conviction and ultimately earned her innocence and freedom.
