Totila (played by Lars Eidinger) is a scholar specializing in the Holocaust in Germany. Although his research is highly regarded in the academic community and his future looks bright, this brutal study has pushed Totila's mental health to the brink of collapse. It turns out that Totila harbors a dark secret: his grandfather used to be a Nazi, personally responsible for the deaths of many innocent people. Whenever he thinks about this, Totila feels immense pain. By chance, Totila meets a Jewish girl named Zahi (played by Adèle Haenel). Zahi is cheerful and lively, illuminating Totila's gloomy world like a ray of sunshine. Zahi's grandmother was persecuted and killed by the Nazis during World War II, and what Zahi cannot accept is that the person who persecuted her grandmother was none other than Totila's grandfather.
