In a corner of India, a man is dreaming... He dreams that he has come to his mother with 500 rupees, hoping that he and his mother are no longer in such pain. But just as he is about to place the money in his mother's hand, he sees that around him are children just like him, along with more than ten very old elderly people. These people immediately surround him, and he is slowly swallowed by the crowd... Born in a middle-class family in a small town in India, she once worked as an actress. In 1976, she went to Harvard University in the United States, where she fell in love with filmmaking. During her student years, she shot a series of documentaries about contemporary Indian society, gaining a certain level of influence. Mira Nair's first feature film, "Salaam Bombay!", showcases the painful life of a young boy struggling in the slums of Mumbai. With a documentary style and realistic approach, it powerfully unveils the tragic experiences of street children. Though it was her debut, it was steady and mature, winning the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1988. Since the 1980s, Mira Nair has become an iconic figure of Indian cinema in the West. Her other films include "Mississippi Masala," "The Perez Family," "Kama Sutra," "A Tale of Love," and the recent HBO documentary "The Laughing Club of India." She is the first female director to win the Golden Lion award.
