The death of her daughter has profoundly affected Lois (played by Melissa Leo), as a mother, she cannot forgive her negligence and failure. In the face of his wife's breakdown, Doug (played by James Gandolfini) feels immense pain yet helplessness; he wanders between bars and brothels in an attempt to temporarily forget the cruelty of reality. In a strip club, Doug meets 16-year-old dancer Mallory (played by Kristen Stewart), and after a brief interaction, they strike a deal—Doug will pay $100 a day to stay at Mallory's home as her tenant. When her husband completely disappears from their lives, Lois feels the crisis; after ten years without leaving home, she decides to go out and search for Doug. When Lois finds Doug, she is shocked not only by the fact that her husband is cohabiting with Mallory but also by how eerily similar Mallory is to their daughter. By an odd twist of fate, Lois also moves into Mallory's home, creating a strange three-person family.
