The film is adapted from true historical events. The story takes place in the 16th century, where King Henry VIII (Robert Shaw) falls in love with a woman named Anne (Vanessa Redgrave). He wants to divorce his queen but is constrained by societal morals. Henry VIII turns to Thomas More (Paul Scofield), the Chancellor, asking him to sign the divorce decree, attempting to alleviate his guilt by leveraging Thomas's esteemed reputation. Thomas, who is upright and principled, is deeply troubled by the king's unreasonable request, as he understands that refusing the king usually leads to dire consequences. Guided by his conscience, Thomas adheres to his principles, refusing to sign and resigning from his office. However, even so, his integrity ultimately does not save him from a tragic fate.
