In 1927, a large number of impoverished farmers flocked to the mining town of Jinguashi in the Jiufen area of Taiwan to pursue their gold rush dreams. The honest tenant farmer A-Zhu and his brother A-Wei joined the rush and rented a room in the shabby house of the widow A-Rou. A-Rou, a pitiful woman known for bringing misfortune to husbands, develops feelings for A-Zhu over time. The gold rush leads to rampant smuggling and prostitution in Jiufen. The Japanese authorities send the talented Shibata to manage order in the gold mines. However, the miners collude with the brothels, and gold transactions become increasingly rampant, leading to a series of violent protests and Shibata's death. Shortly after their marriage, A-Zhu falls ill and dies, leaving A-Rou in despair, accompanied by her four children and her deceased husband's tablet, as she sadly leaves Jiufen...
