In voiceover, a middle-aged man takes the audience back to the small town of Rockaway where he grew up, filled with fascinating stories revolving around radio broadcasts... Two thieves break into a home, coincidentally during a telephone quiz show on the radio that selects this very location. The thieves answer all the questions correctly, and the next day the male homeowner returns to find his money and possessions missing, but the prizes from the quiz show piled up at his doorstep. Aunt Bea experiences a blind date interrupted by news on the radio about Martians attacking Earth, leading her date to flee in panic. Radio star Roger becomes entangled with nightclub singer Sally (Mia Farrow), who doesn't get the radio job she hoped for but shines in wartime programming. The masked crusader's continuous broadcasts captivate countless youths, yet the protagonist never manages to gain a crusader ring... The New Year's broadcast of 1944 marks the curtain falling on all these classic era memories. This film won the 1988 BAFTA Awards for Best Costume and Best Production Design.
