The story is adapted from Jonathan Raymond's novel "Half Life," co-adapted by Raymond and director Kelly Reichardt. It is set in 1820s Oregon, where a Western chef named Cookie (played by John Magaro) arrives in the untamed West seeking his fortune and encounters Chinese immigrant King Lu (played by Orion Lee), who is also looking for opportunities. The two hit it off and partner together to run a business with a cow.
