During the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, Shaolin lay disciple Hong Xiguan (played by Jet Li) is a member of the Tiandihui, striving to overthrow the Qing and restore the Ming. Hong Xiguan is betrayed by his fellow disciple Ma Ning'er (played by Ji Chunhua), leading to the murder of his family by traitors. Fortunately, his young son Wending (played by Xie Miao) escapes the disaster. After killing Ma Ning'er, Hong Xiguan goes on the run with Wending. The father and son encounter Zhu Xiaoqian and her daughter Hong Dou, who are con artists, leading to a series of events.
