Young captain Edmond (James Caviezel) is preparing to marry his beloved fiancée Mercedes, but the first mate Fernand, jealous of everything Edmond has, plots to imprison him for life in the most secure prison located on a secluded island, and Mercedes falls into Fernand’s embrace. After 13 years in prison, Edmond meets a fellow inmate, and with his guidance, devises a meticulous escape plan and acquires a map leading to a great treasure. Finally, on a dark and stormy night, Edmond risks his life and successfully escapes from prison. After finding the treasure, Edmond uses his newfound wealth to buy a title of count and becomes the Count of Monte Cristo. After changing his name and identity, Edmond embarks on his path of revenge.
