The story is based on the famous World War II military event "the Dunkirk evacuation." At the beginning of World War II, 400,000 British and French Allied troops were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk by enemy forces, facing an extremely urgent situation as the enemy closed in. The British government and navy mobilized a large number of crew members and encouraged citizens to rescue the troops. British soldier Tommy (played by Fionn Whitehead) meets Gibson and Alex while trying to escape the beach. Meanwhile, civilian boat owner Mr. Dawson (played by Mark Rylance) leaves England with his son Peter and 17-year-old George to go to Dunkirk to save the soldiers. The three of them successively rescue Navy soldiers (played by Cillian Murphy), pilot Collins, and Tommy's group, while fighter pilot Farrier (played by Tom Hardy) fights valiantly under a tough situation of being sandwiched by the enemy. The film tells the story from land, sea, and air perspectives, where under the encirclement of the German army, everyone must fight for their own survival if they hope to make it home.
