During the Northern Song Dynasty, scholar Zhao Xingde (played by Hiroshi Satou) faced a frustrating examination from the Western Xia and ended up regretting his performance at the palace examination. Disheartened, he decided to venture beyond the Great Wall and travel to the enchanting Western Xia. During his journey, the caravan he was part of was attacked by a mercenary army made up of Han people, forcing him to join the troops, where he gradually earned the respect of the captain, Zhu Wangli. In battles against the Uyghurs, he saved and hid the Uyghur princess Sirubiya (played by Anna Nakagawa). Their relationship transformed from hate to love, and they planned to escape to Western Xia together. However, due to a twist of fate, Xingde had to leave his beloved behind and continue alone. To his surprise, after two years, he found that Sirubiya had been taken by the Western Xia prince Li Yuanhao (played by Tsunehiko Watase). Subjected to the whims of fate, Xingde was destined to leave behind a legendary tale in the sands of history... This film is adapted from the renowned historical novel by Japanese author Yasushi Inoue and won the Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor (Toshiyuki Nishida) at the 12th Japan Movie Critics Awards in 1988.
