山平 (Katsuzō Matsumura) has become accustomed to the attentive care of his unmarried daughter, 道子 (Shima Iwashita), after his wife passed away many years ago. On the surface, 道子 appears willing to take care of her old father and has never expressed a desire to get married. 山平's pleasure in his old age is spending time drinking and reminiscing with a few old friends from middle school. Whenever his friends mention 道子’s marriage or suggest introducing her to a suitor, 山平 always vaguely declines, although he is unclear about his own fears. He ensures he doesn't drink too much to avoid causing 道子 unnecessary trouble. During a gathering with his middle school classmates, 山平 learns that the beautiful daughter of a teacher who had taken care of him has never married, and after he sees her now aged and worn out while taking the drunken teacher home, he is taken aback and thinks of 道子. He later hints to 道子 to consider marriage, but she interprets it as her father wanting to push her out, leaving her sorrowful. He gently encourages her, and though she nods in agreement with tears in her eyes, he feels an overwhelming sadness.
