In the blink of an eye, it is already 1979. The second-generation Godfather, Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino), has reached old age. In search of redemption for his soul, Michael gradually ends the family's criminal enterprises and turns to legitimate business. Michael's son, Tony, has a passion for the arts and is unwilling to take over the family business. Michael decides to have his brother Sonny's illegitimate son, the hot-headed and womanizing Vincent (played by Andy Garcia), inherit the family legacy as the third Godfather. Michael's daughter Mary (played by Sofia Coppola) falls in love with Vincent, which is opposed by her father, leading to a growing estrangement between father and daughter. In order to legalize the family's assets, Michael prepares to invest in the "Immobiliare" Group through connections in the Vatican, but faces covert obstacles from enemies. The death of the Pope complicates matters even further. In desperation, Michael is forced to resort to violence to solve problems, and his family becomes embroiled in a bloody turmoil.
