In a secluded ancient temple, a scholar named Zhu Xiaolian (played by Deng Chao) who is on his way to take an imperial examination is taken to a fairyland in a painting by a fairy named Mudan (played by Zheng Shuang) who falls from the mural. In this strange fairyland, numerous fairies live a free and happy life under the management of their aunt (played by Yan Ni), but they are strictly forbidden from having romantic feelings for men, and they do not hesitate to deal harshly with men who intrude into their realm. In the fairyland, Zhu Xiaolian meets a fairy named Shaoyao (played by Sun Li). With Shaoyao's help, Zhu Xiaolian avoids the danger of being discovered by the aunt and successfully returns to the human world. However, worried about Mudan's safety, Zhu Xiaolian requests help from a master (played by Zeng Zhiwei) in the ancient temple to return to the fairyland. Although the fairyland is still vibrant with songs and dances, Zhu Xiaolian cannot find Mudan anywhere... This film is adapted from "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio" and directed by Chen Jiaxiong. It is the first big-screen collaboration between the couple Deng Chao and Sun Li.
