As early as 1912, German scientist Friedrich (played by Tom Burke) proposed the theory of "Pangaea," meaning that the continents of the Earth were once all connected and that the current configuration was formed due to tectonic movements causing fragmentation. In 1939, despite the war raging on, the Germans sent a marine expedition team to the Arctic region of Svalbard to seek more evidence supporting this theory. Along with Friedrich himself and his assistant Lainey (played by Jeanette Hain), scientists from around the world set sail under the command of a Russian captain (played by Sven Nordin), heading toward their destination. One side was the ever-changing, enigmatic ocean, and the other was the endlessly shifting situation of war; everything happening on the continent affected the delicate balance of relationships among the scientists.
