In the fifteenth year of Meiji, judo enthusiast Zisanjuro (played by Fujita Susumu) inadvertently witnesses the battle between the Monma gang and the Judo Institute. The head of the Judo Institute, Yano Honkuro, single-handedly defeats the Monma gang using judo, earning Zisanjuro's respect, and he becomes his disciple. However, Yano believes Zisanjuro is naturally combative and fickle, intentionally testing his patience. With guidance from an old monk, Zisanjuro immerses himself in training, ultimately comprehending his master's teachings. Under his mentor's training, Zisanjuro's judo improves dramatically, gaining fame from the fight against the Monma gang. At this point, an unexpected visitor arrives to challenge him, and just as Zisanjuro is about to step forward, he is rejected, with a promise to meet again. Afterwards, Zisanjuro encounters the beautiful Kayo (played by Hōgi Yuki), and falls in love, only to find that his martial arts rival is her father—the jujutsu master Muraishi (played by Shimura Takashi)…
